What’s Really Under Your Clutter
Clutter is an emotional issue and the reason why we accumulate it – and why we can’t let go of it – often connects with our deepest fears and sadness.
When clutter has gotten the upper hand, there is inevitably an emotional root. Often these clutter blocks are unconscious reasons people hold onto stuff that no longer serves them.
Some examples of clutter blocks include:
- Buying for a fantasy life
- Holding onto inherited possessions you don’t want
- A gift from someone who you worry may be offended if you don’t keep it
- Holding onto something just in case you need it someday
Do you recognize any that may be the obstacle between you and your goal for an efficient, beautiful home that you can live in with ease? You can take comfort in knowing that whatever you have going on, you are not alone.
There are many reasons to clear out clutter. Science has shown that the visual impact of having too many possessions can lead to a sharp decrease in wellness, all from acquiring in the pursuit of happiness. On top of that, all of our energy goes into collecting the stuff, managing the stuff, moving the stuff, or freaking out when someone threw the stuff away.
It’s not about the pile of paper; it’s about what that pile represents.
If you want your home to look different than it does, but you can’t seem to take any action, there is undoubtedly an emotional underpinning. You are not lazy. You are not a “poor housekeeper”. Most likely, there is just a clutter block preventing you from taking the action you want in your heart.
We love seeing people work through their clutter blocks, taking control of their lives and deciding to streamline and set the stage for their next adventure. This is what we call 'rightsizing'.
Rightsizing is finding that perfect balance between too much house, too much stuff, and having “just enough” to be happy, healthy and comfortable.
Often, but now always, our rightsizing clients are moving into a smaller space because they’ve reached a point in their lives where the place they raised their family is simply too big, expensive, and exhausting to maintain. They are ready to live somewhere that asks less of them and leaves them more time for fun.
For those who choose to rightsize, we know the happiness that awaits them on the other side. It’s like a hip replacement – clients always say to us when it’s done, “Why didn’t we do this sooner?!”
The primary goal is always to help our clients move into a home that they enjoy being in, that helps them quickly and efficiently get out into the world, and that they can share with others as often as they feel like.
If your home isn’t all three things – restful, helpful, and shareable – then on some level, your home is taking energy from you instead of supporting you to live your best life.
The process of ‘rightsizing’ can give you a wonderful opportunity to move into your next phase lighter and free to enjoy your next chapter as you envisioned – maybe taking up new hobbies or discovering a new passion.
Because it isn’t about your beach towels – it’s about getting you to the beach.
