Halloween Safety Tips for Markham Homeowners

pumpkins and flowers on porch steps

Before Trick-or-Treaters come knockin’ at your door this Halloween, follow these tips to keep everyone safe while on your property.

Clear a path from the road to your front door.  Walk the same path children will walk to get to your door on Halloween.  To prevent falls, pick up objects in the yard, sidewalk, or driveway and be sure any tools are safely put away.

Move potted plants, extension cords, hoses, and any lawn furniture away from areas that are likely to be walked on by Trick-or-Treaters. Carved pumpkins and Halloween decorations should also be put at a safe distance to prevent people from tripping over them.

Leave the porch lights on.  To avoid having someone trip over something he or she can’t see make sure your entry way is well-lit.  This also tells Trick-or-Treaters that you are open for business.  If needed, you may want to install additional lights in the front yard if it’s a long trek to your front door.

Light your jack-o-lanterns with battery powered lights.  Believe it or not, the candle inside your carved pumpkin may be a fire hazard to children’s costumes.   If you do opt for a live flame, use votive candles and make sure it is away from any possible exposure to Trick- or-Treaters' costumes or where they will be walking or standing.

Keeps your pets inside and safe.  The weird sights and strange sounds of Halloween can be awfully confusing for a pet.  With Trick-or-Treaters coming and going, what’s to stop your cat from running scared or your dog from mistaking them as intruders?  They need to be kept indoors and properly confined to a safe place.

Deter any vandalismby parking your vehicles inside a locked garage where possible and put away all garbage.  It’s also a good idea to have someone remain home and keep interior lights on during trick-or-treating.  Contact your local police immediately if you see anything suspicious.

Following these steps will make Halloween a safe and fun night of trick or treat for all!
